Dhaka, Aug 4 (V7N) – Traffic in Dhaka was severely disrupted on Sunday morning due to the ‘all-out non-cooperation’ movement organized by the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement. The protest has caused significant delays and difficulties for commuters on the first working day of the week.
The city's streets saw a marked decrease in public transportation, with only a few private cars, motorbikes, CNG vehicles, and bicycles operating. Many people were forced to walk to their destinations or rely on costly alternative transportation.
Despite no official leave announcements from the government or private organizations for Sunday, employees faced considerable challenges. Many had to pay higher fares to reach their workplaces. For instance, Matiar Rahman, a private sector employee, reported that his usual fare of Tk 40 to 45 for traveling from Azimpur to Gulshan-1 had surged to Tk 110 due to the lack of public transport.
Commuters were seen waiting at various bus stops, uncertain about their ability to reach their destinations. The presence of public transport was notably low, and some individuals expressed frustration at the situation.
The protesters have gathered at busy intersections such as Shahbagh and Science Lab, where police presence has been notably absent. The non-cooperation movement was announced by Rifat Rashed and Mahin, coordinators of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, via their Facebook page on Friday.
