Dhaka, August 3 — Bangladesh Railway has announced the suspension of all train services across the country starting Sunday, citing unavoidable reasons. The suspension includes both short-distance and inter-city trains, effectively halting railway operations until further notice.
The announcement was made by Bangladesh Railway Director (Public Relations), Nahid Hasan Khan, on Saturday. He confirmed to the media that all train movements would cease, and the public would be informed once services resume.
Despite the suspension notice, Bangladesh Railways clarified that trains operated on Saturday as scheduled, with no prior announcement of a shutdown. This sudden halt in operations comes after train services were partially resumed on Thursday, following a complete stoppage since July 18. The initial shutdown coincided with the "Complete Shutdown" program led by the anti-discrimination student movement, which protested the quota system in government jobs.
As per the latest directive, even the short-distance trains that had been running since Thursday will be suspended from Sunday. The railway authorities have not provided a timeline for the resumption of services, leaving passengers and commuters uncertain about future travel plans.
The suspension of train services is expected to cause significant disruptions, particularly affecting those relying on railways for transportation. The decision reflects the ongoing challenges and instability stemming from the recent social and political unrest in the country.
