Shafiqul Alam, the Bureau Chief of Agence France-Presse (AFP) in Bangladesh, is set to become the press secretary to the interim government’s Chief Adviser, Professor Muhammad Yunus.

He confirmed this information through a post on Facebook.

He wrote: “Professor Muhammad Yunus has asked me to be his press secretary in the Interim Government. I am honoured to serve him and the nation. I haven't got the appointment letter yet. Hopefully, I'll get it in a day or two. AFP, my employers for 20 years, too wants me to stay with them. They are a big family. They've supported me all these years like a father supports his child. But I am ready to take up a new challenge. I seek your prayers!!”

Alam has been a journalist based in Bangladesh for 27 years. He joined AFP in 2005 as a correspondent and has been leading the bureau as chief since January 2012.

He led the AFP to its award-winning coverage of the Rohingya crisis. Shafiq has written thousands of stories and features on every major event and issue in Bangladesh.
