The United Nations has expressed its readiness to support the interim government and the people of Bangladesh as required.
"We remain committed to assisting the Government and the people of Bangladesh as needed," stated Farhan Haq, Deputy Spokesperson for the UN Secretary-General, in response to a question posed by Mushfiqul Fazal Ansarey on Thursday.
High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk and Chief Adviser Prof Muhammad Yunus have been discussing the potential "comprehensive support" that their office could provide to the interim government, particularly in addressing issues of accountability.
Farhan mentioned that a team is expected to visit Dhaka next week to discuss potential areas of support and the process for investigating human rights violations amidst the recent violence and unrest.
The High Commissioner is committed to helping the interim government and the people of Bangladesh ensure a successful transition that bolsters human rights protection.
