Dhaka, Aug 26 (V7N): Forty Ansar personnel were detained by the Bangladesh Army from the secretariat on Sunday and subsequently handed over to the police, following a clash with students. Shaheen, the officer-in-charge of Shahbagh police station, confirmed that the army transferred the Ansar members to police custody on Sunday night, and a case is expected to be filed against them.

The incident began when the Ansar members, who were stationed at the secretariat, blocked all five gates around noon, demanding the nationalization of their positions. Their protest effectively shut down the administrative hub. However, they called off the protest and returned to work after discussions with Home Affairs Adviser Lt Gen (retd) Md Jahangir Alam.

Later that evening, around 9pm, tensions escalated when a clash erupted between Dhaka University students and the Ansar members at the secretariat. The conflict arose after reports spread that key figures from the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, including Sarjis Alam and Hasnat Abdullah, were confined within the secretariat. In response, students from several university halls gathered at Raju Bhashkorjo on campus and marched towards the secretariat, leading to a violent confrontation that resulted in several injuries.
