Dhaka, Sept 01 (V7N): Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus is set to attend the 79th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) this month, but his visit will be brief, according to Foreign Affairs Adviser Md Touhid Hossain.

Speaking to reporters at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Touhid Hossain mentioned that he would discuss Yunus’s engagement at the UNGA but did not confirm the exact departure date.

The foreign affairs adviser also noted that while there might be some meetings on the sidelines of the UNGA, the brief duration of Yunus’s stay in New York will limit these opportunities.

Regarding the potential return of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to Bangladesh, Touhid Hossain reiterated that actions would be taken if required by legal processes.

On the topic of signed Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) with India, including one related to the railway sector, he clarified that MoUs are not legally binding and could be reviewed to protect interests.

When asked about Sheikh Hasina's status in India, the adviser suggested that journalists direct their queries to Indian authorities.

South Asian affairs expert Michael Kugelman, director of the South Asia Institute at the Wilson Center in Washington DC, highlighted that Yunus’s participation in the UNGA presents a significant opportunity to present his government’s economic plans and seek international support for Bangladesh's economic stability. Kugelman emphasized the importance of Yunus outlining a vision for governance, reform plans, and efforts to restore democracy.
