Dhaka, Sep 05 (V7N) — Major General (retd) Abdul Mateen has alleged that the BDR insurgency was part of a long-term plan aimed at undermining Bangladesh, involving both domestic traitors and a foreign power. His statements were made at a press conference held at the National Press Club on Thursday morning.

General Mateen contended that the insurgency, which erupted on February 25-26, 2009, was not sparked by the so-called 'Operation Dalbhat,' as widely believed. Instead, he suggested that the Awami League government intentionally spread rumors and incited discontent among Border Guard Bangladesh (BDR) members, leading to the rebellion.

He criticized the investigation into the uprising, alleging significant limitations and government interference. According to Mateen, these factors hindered efforts to uncover the identities of those responsible for the violence.

The BDR insurgency resulted in the deaths of 74 people, including 57 army officers, and has been a subject of extensive controversy and debate in Bangladesh's political and military history.
