Dhaka, Sept 7 (V7N): ICT Adviser Nahid Islam announced on Saturday that a committee will soon be established to transform Ganabhaban, the official residence of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, into a museum commemorating the mass uprising. The decision came after a visit to Ganabhaban, where Nahid was accompanied by advisers Adilur Rahman Khan and Asif Mahmud.
"The Cabinet has already approved the conversion of the prime minister's residence, known as Ganabhaban, into a museum to honor the victory of the people during the July uprising. This museum will preserve the significance of the August 5 triumph, achieved through immense sacrifice and bloodshed, for future generations," Nahid stated.
He emphasized that the museum would serve as a global reminder of the fate that befalls authoritarian and fascist leaders, illustrating that ultimate power rests with the people. "This museum will stand as a symbol of the July uprising, and today was just the first step in the process," he added.
Discussions with officials from the Public Works and Architecture Department have already taken place, according to Nahid. He revealed that initial suggestions had been received, and a committee would likely be formed by Sunday, with work potentially beginning next week to expedite the museum's opening.
When asked about the committee's composition, Nahid confirmed that it would include museum and architecture experts, along with input from international professionals who have worked on similar projects.
The museum will document the 36-day events of the July uprising, highlighting the martyrs and detailing the victims of enforced disappearances and extrajudicial killings over the past 16 years, culminating in the August 5 moment. Nahid explained that the current state of the Ganabhaban structure, which is dilapidated, will be preserved, with digital elements incorporated to showcase the last 16 years.
Regarding future arrangements for the prime minister's residence, Nahid said that decision would be made later, noting that for now, the chief adviser would continue residing at the State Guest House Jamuna.
