Dhaka, Sep 19 (V7N) – Information and Broadcasting Adviser Nahid Islam has called for immediate legal action against those involved in the mob lynching incidents that claimed the lives of two youths at Jahangirnagar University (JU) and Dhaka University (DU) on September 18.

Describing the deaths as "tragic," Nahid took to Facebook at 5:00 PM today, stating that action should be taken once the university administrations complete their investigations. "The incidents of mob lynching at Dhaka University and Jahangirnagar University are tragic. Legal action should be taken subject to investigation by the university administration as soon as possible," he wrote.

The adviser’s remarks follow the violent deaths of two individuals in separate mob attacks. At Dhaka University, a youth named Tofazzal was beaten to death by students at Fazlul Haque Hall, allegedly on suspicion of theft. Witnesses reported that Tofazzal was detained around 8 PM, subjected to hours of beating, briefly fed, and then assaulted again until he collapsed. He was later taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH), where doctors declared him dead.

At Jahangirnagar University, Shamim Ahmed, a former leader of the Chhatra League, also succumbed to injuries after being attacked by students earlier in the afternoon.

Nahid’s post also touched on the ongoing debate regarding banning outsiders from public university campuses. He expressed that controlling outsiders is neither feasible nor appropriate. Instead, he suggested a policy that would preserve the academic environment while allowing space for political and cultural activities and public interaction.

"More urgent than controlling outsiders is the need to manage traffic on Dhaka University’s campus," Nahid added.

Furthermore, he urged university administrations to file cases against individuals involved in the torture of students during recent and past movements. He called for a fact-finding commission to identify torturers in educational institutions, recommending administrative measures against them.

Nahid emphasized that mob justice is unacceptable, urging students to act responsibly. "It is not possible to control agitated mobs unless swift legal and administrative action is taken against torturers and terrorists," he stated, adding that such actions are necessary to prevent further incidents.
