Dhaka, Sep 19 (V7N) – The Interim Government Advisory Council, chaired by Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus, has given both in-principle and final approval to the draft of the 'Interim Government Ordinance, 2024'. This approval was granted during the council's meeting on Thursday.

A press release from the Cabinet Department detailed that the ordinance addresses the ongoing constitutional crisis that arose following the resignation of the Prime Minister on 5 August, in response to mass protests by students across the country. These protests, triggered by alleged repression and violence under the previous Awami League government, culminated in the dissolution of the 12th National Parliament by the President on 6 August.

The President sought the advice of the Supreme Court under Article 106 of the Constitution on the matter of forming an interim government to maintain public interest, ensure national security, and keep the state's executive functions operational. The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court issued an opinion on 8 August, allowing the President to appoint a Chief Adviser and other advisers to manage the executive branch during the constitutional vacancy.

In response to the constitutional crisis, and in line with the public's demand for reform, the interim government was formally established by the President on 8 August. The newly approved Interim Government Ordinance, 2024 outlines the roles, powers, and responsibilities of the interim government, including provisions for the Chief Adviser and other advisers, as well as matters related to resignation and privileges.

The ordinance marks a crucial step in ensuring stability during this transitional period, as the country moves forward from the political upheaval of recent months.
