Dhaka, Sep 20 (V7N) – The government has cancelled the appointments of the managing directors (MDs) of six state-owned banks, according to a letter from the Financial Institutions Department of the Ministry of Finance. The decision affects Sonali Bank, Agrani Bank, Rupali Bank, Janata Bank, BASIC Bank, and Bangladesh Development Bank Limited (BDBL).
In a notification signed by Afshana Bilkis, Deputy Secretary of the Financial Institutions Department, the contracts of the following MDs and CEOs have been terminated:
Md. Afzal Karim, MD of Sonali Bank
Md. Abdul Jabbar, MD of Janata Bank
Md. Murshedul Kabir, MD of Agrani Bank
Mohammad Jahangir, MD of Rupali Bank
Md. Anisur Rahman, MD of BASIC Bank
Md. Habibur Rahman Ghazi, MD of BDBL
The chairpersons of these banks have been formally notified of the cancellation. However, no new MDs have been appointed to replace the outgoing executives.
The MDs of state-owned commercial banks in Bangladesh are typically appointed on a contractual basis. The letter from the Financial Institutions Department confirmed the termination of the remaining terms of these contracts but did not provide details on the appointment of new managing directors.
