The World Bank Managing Director for operations Anna Bjerde flies in Dhaka this evening on her first official visit to Bangladesh.

A World Bank (WB) press release released here on Saturday said that Bjerde's one-day visit would include meetings with senior government officials, members of civil society, and business leaders. Among the persons she will see are Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and Finance Minister Abul Hassan Mahmood Ali.

Bjerde will accompany WB Vice-President for the South Asia Region Martin Raiser.

The World Bank was among the first development partners to support Bangladesh after its independence. Since then, the Bank has contributed more than US$41 billion to Bangladesh, mostly in the form of grants or concessional financing.

Bangladesh is the site of the World Bank Group's International Development Association's (IDA) largest ongoing project.
