During a discussion about LDC graduation Bangladesh's State Minister for Commerce, Ahasanul Islam Titu, highlighted the government's emphasis on diversifying export-quality products, especially in the leather, jute, and pharmaceutical industries. Perspectives from Bangladesh" was arranged by the German group Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung in association with the Center for Policy Dialogue (CPD).
During the discussion, Dr. Debapriya Bhattacharya, a distinguished fellow at CPD, emphasized the importance of utilizing the three years effectively. He stressed the need to move away from dependence on the garment sector and transition to a developed and diversified economy. Bhattacharya highlighted the significance of increasing worker productivity and production efficiency and investing in worker interests, talent, and modernization.
Titu highlighted that LDC graduation poses a challenge for Bangladesh, and the government has until 2029 to address this challenge, as per the guidelines provided by the World Trade Organization (WTO). The Prime Minister has prioritized product diversification in the leather, jute, and pharmaceutical sectors due to their export potential. Additionally, this year has been declared as the "Handicrafts Year" to emphasize the sector's role in employment generation.
The dialogue was moderated by Dr. Fahmida Khatun, and a presentation on the topic was given by Professor Mustafizur Rahman, a distinguished fellow at CPD. The event also featured speeches from Senior Commerce Secretary Tapan Kanti Ghosh, Ferdaus Ara Begum (ECO of BUILD), and Richard Kaniweski (representative of Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung, Bangladesh), among others.
It is worth noting that Ahasanul Islam Titu is a prominent business leader, a Member of Parliament for Tangail-6, and the Honorable State Minister for Commerce in Bangladesh. He has extensive experience in various financial and industrial sectors, including insurance, capital markets, and garments
