Bangladesh Bank's analysis of inward remittances on a district-wise basis reveals that a significant portion of expatriates' income remittances in Bangladesh flows through bank branches located in Dhaka.
This statistic suggests that either most expatriates' families reside in Dhaka or they primarily hold accounts in bank branches within the capital city.
Chattogram holds the second position in terms of expatriate income remittances, followed by Sylhet and Cumilla.
The data, covering the period from July 2023 to February 2024, was disclosed in the central bank's district-wise expatriate income report.
During the eight-month period, expatriates sent a total of $15.07 billion in remittances. Dhaka district received the highest amount at $5.23 billion, while Chattogram received $1.42 billion.
Sylhet district received $870 million, Cumilla $810 million, and Noakhali $460 million during the same period.
Additionally, Brahmanbaria received $380 million, Feni $370 million, Moulvibazar $360 million, Chandpur $350 million, and Narsingdi $250 million in expatriate remittances.
