China is actively seeking to attract more tourists from Bangladesh to explore its diverse destinations, including Beijing and Yunnan, and to experience its rich cultural heritage. During the celebration of "China Tourism Day" in Dhaka, Chinese Embassy Cultural Counsellor Li Shaopeng emphasized the importance of enhancing cultural and tourism exchanges between the two countries. He highlighted the potential benefits of such cooperation, including the development of tourism products that would be mutually advantageous.
The event, held at the Bangladesh National Museum, was jointly organized by the Chinese embassy in Dhaka, the Bangladesh National Museum, and the Association of Travel Agents of Bangladesh (ATAB) to mark the 14th China Tourism Day. This day has been observed annually on May 19 since 2011 to honor the Chinese explorer and geologist Xu Xiake, who began his extensive travels across China on this day in 1613.
Li Shaopeng noted that tourism plays a crucial role in fostering mutual understanding and strengthening the friendship between China and Bangladesh, reflecting their close geographical and emotional ties. He assured that the Chinese government is committed to improving services to facilitate inbound tourism, including enhancements in cross-border payments, scenic spot visits, hotel accommodations, and product supply.
The event saw participation from over 200 representatives from various sectors, including the Bangladesh Tourism Board, major travel agencies, think tanks, cultural institutions, media from both countries, Chinese airlines, and Confucius Institutes in Bangladesh. The theme for this year's celebration was "Explore China, Embrace Happiness."
Md Kamruzzaman, Director General of the Bangladesh National Museum, expressed his hope that the event would deepen Bangladeshi people's appreciation of Chinese culture and tourism, thus promoting people-to-people exchanges and strengthening the bilateral relationship. ATAB President Abdus Salam Aref also expressed optimism for increased cooperation between the tourism authorities of both nations, predicting a rise in Bangladeshi tourists visiting China for various purposes, thereby enhancing Sino-Bangladeshi friendship.
The event included presentations on China's rich tourism resources and new measures to facilitate inbound travel, such as tourism promotion, route introductions, and photo exhibitions showcasing the landscapes of Beijing and Yunnan. Representatives from Air China, China Southern Airlines, and China Eastern Airlines shared updates and promotional information. Notably, Air China announced the upcoming launch of a new Beijing-Dhaka route, which will leverage its extensive network as a Star Alliance member.
The event also featured cultural performances, including lion dances and Hanfu shows, presented by teachers and volunteers from Confucius Institutes and classrooms at Dhaka University, North South University, and Shanto-Mariam Academy of Creative Technology. Additionally, a photo exhibition showcasing over 60 images, including stunning shots of the Forbidden City and Peking Opera performances, will be open at the national museum until May 21.
