Dhaka, Nov 23 (V7N)-  The dengue crisis continues to spiral out of control across Bangladesh, with the capital city and other regions reporting alarming increases in infections and fatalities. Over the past 24 hours, from Friday morning to Saturday morning, 10 more individuals have succumbed to dengue, including six women and four men, while 886 new cases were admitted to hospitals during the same period.

According to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), the dengue death toll this year has reached 448, with a significant spike in October when 135 fatalities were recorded. Women account for a majority of the fatalities, while men constitute the greater number of those infected.

The cumulative data for 2024 shows 85,712 hospitalizations due to dengue, reflecting the relentless spread of the Aedes mosquito-borne disease.

  • Dhaka Metropolitan Area: 373 new admissions
  • Barisal Division: 144 cases
  • Dhaka Division (excluding the city): 121 cases
  • Khulna Division: 107 cases
  • Chittagong Division: 69 cases
  • Rajshahi Division: 40 cases
  • Mymensingh Division: 27 cases
  • Rangpur Division: 4 cases
  • Sylhet Division: 1 case

The DGHS report highlights that despite increased awareness efforts, dengue infections continue to rise, exacerbating public health challenges.

In 2023, the dengue epidemic claimed 1,705 lives, with 321,179 reported infections, marking a record high for Bangladesh. The current trend raises concerns about the potential for another devastating year.

Health authorities urge citizens to adopt preventive measures, including eliminating mosquito breeding grounds and using protective measures to curb the spread of the disease.
