Dhaka, Dec 01 (V7N)— Prominent television presenter and journalist Munni Saha has been arrested in connection with a case related to the shooting death of a student during the July-August student-public movement. She was detained by police on Saturday night from Karwan Bazar in the capital.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (DC) Tejgaon Division Mohammad Ruhul Kabir Khan confirmed the arrest to reporters, stating that Saha was surrounded by locals in Karwan Bazar before being taken to Tejgaon police station. She was later transferred to the Detective Branch (DB) office for further investigation.

Officer-in-Charge of Tejgaon Police Station Mubarak Hossain said Saha has been formally shown as arrested in a case filed at Jatrabari Police Station. The case involves the shooting death of 17-year-old student Naeem Howladar during protests earlier this year.

On August 22, Kamrul Islam, the father of the deceased, filed the case, naming several individuals including former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, various ministers and MPs, Awami League activists, Jubo League and Chhatra League members, as well as police and RAB officials. Munni Saha is among seven journalists accused in the case.

The arrest has sparked widespread discussion, with many questioning the implications for press freedom and the handling of cases related to political and social unrest. Further details regarding Saha’s legal status and next steps are awaited.
