Dhaka, Apr 12 (V7N)- Thousands have gathered at Suhrawardy Udyan in the capital today for the ‘March for Gaza’ program, organized to protest against ongoing Israeli aggression and genocide in Palestine. The main event began at 3:00 PM, but demonstrators from across Dhaka started arriving in the area from the early morning hours.
Processions were seen streaming into Suhrawardy Udyan from Shahbagh, Doel Chattar, and Nilkhet, with many participants carrying Bangladeshi and Palestinian flags. Chants and slogans condemning the Israeli occupation and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu echoed through the streets as demonstrators voiced their solidarity with the people of Gaza.
Notably, leaders and activists from Jamaat-e-Islami joined the protest with a procession from Baitul Mukarram Mosque, following a brief rally at the mosque’s north gate.
In response to the large public gathering, law enforcement agencies and joint forces were deployed across key intersections in Dhaka, maintaining tight security. Witnesses reported that members of the army were seen removing black flags carried by some demonstrators, a move that sparked minor tension in isolated areas.
The event is being led by the Palestine Solidarity Movement Bangladesh, which stated that the initiative aims to “stand with the oppressed Palestinians and build international public opinion against Israeli war crimes.”
Prominent figures from the political, social, and cultural sectors are expected to address the gathering during the closing session of the event. Islamic scholars Mizanur Rahman Azhari and Sheikh Ahmadullah are also scheduled to speak.
This nationwide call for solidarity with Palestine has drawn widespread public support, reflecting Bangladesh’s long-standing position in favor of Palestinian rights and against Israeli military actions.
