Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) traffic division has fined approximately 360 vehicles, including motorcycles and cars, in recent days for illegally displaying government and police stickers.
According to SM Mehedi Hasan, Joint Commissioner of DMP's south traffic zone, the action was taken under section 92[2] of the Road Transport Act, 2018. He made this statement during a press briefing at the DMP media center on May 5.
This crackdown follows directives from the DMP commissioner issued on April 28, instructing traffic police to take strict action against drivers and vehicles unlawfully using government and police personnel stickers.
Mehedi Hasan highlighted the increasing trend of using logos and stickers of police, detective agencies, government offices, and media on vehicles. He noted instances where vehicles falsely display logos intended for government officials without proper identification, often used by relatives of police officials.
This misuse of stickers poses risks as criminals also exploit falsified stickers to navigate the city undetected, Mehedi Hasan emphasized. In response to the commissioner's directives, DMP has checked vehicles displaying police and government official logos, compiling a list of officials whose relatives misuse these official emblems.
Collaborating with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), DMP aims to alleviate traffic congestion in Dhaka. Plans include establishing designated bus stops at specific stations, Mehedi Hasan explained.
He also mentioned ongoing efforts to enforce vehicle fitness regulations, with actions taken against 3,000 vehicles lacking fitness licenses and the seizure of nearly 2,000 engine-operated auto-rickshaws operating without permits.
