Dhaka, July 07 (V7N) — Police used water cannons and sound grenades to disperse a procession of sacked Bangladesh Rifles (BDR) members as they marched toward the official residence of the Chief Advisor, Jamuna, on Monday night. The clash at the Kakrail intersection left at least two former BDR personnel injured.
The dismissed members of the paramilitary force had set out from Shahbagh, where they had been holding a sit-in protest in front of the museum since morning. They were demanding the fulfillment of three key demands, details of which were not immediately disclosed. The group left Shahbagh at around 11:15 PM in a procession, determined to press their case at Jamuna.
However, police intercepted the marchers at Kakrail intersection. When the protesters attempted to break through the police barricade, law enforcers deployed water cannons and sound grenades to disperse them.
Senior officials of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) stated that the authorities had imposed a ban on all types of gatherings, meetings, processions, and rallies in and around the Bangladesh Secretariat and Jamuna. Despite these restrictions, the sacked BDR members attempted to march toward the Chief Advisor’s residence and were consequently dispersed.
The protesters have vowed to continue their movement until their demands are met.
