Dhaka, Sep 16 (V7N): Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus has instructed police officials and experts from Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (Buet) to develop strategies to alleviate traffic congestion in Dhaka.

During a meeting held today at the State Guest House Jamuna with senior officials from Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) and two traffic system specialists from Buet, the chief adviser emphasized the need for immediate action. "We must ease traffic congestion and find an immediate solution for the residents," he urged, according to the CA's press office.

The DMP has been tasked with testing pilot programs to reduce congestion, such as limiting bus stop times to under two minutes on key city roads. These measures will later be expanded to other areas.

Buet experts have been asked to develop localized solutions for at least one major traffic corridor, utilizing their students’ input. They are also expected to improve the city's signaling systems using local expertise.

Professor Moazzem Hossain, a traffic systems expert from Buet, presented a study indicating that Dhaka's traffic congestion costs the country at least Tk40,000 crore annually.

Additional Commissioner of DMP Kh Nazmul Hassan reported that the situation has been improving in recent weeks with the deployment of additional traffic officers. Full deployment is expected by the end of next week.

Other attendees at the meeting included Lieutenant General (retired) Abdul Hafiz, Special Assistant to the Chief Adviser; Buet professor Md Hadiuzzaman; and DMP's Additional Commissioner Faruk Ahmed.
