Ukhiya, Feb 11, (V7N) - The mobile court in Ukhiya, Cox's Bazar, imposed a fine of three lakh taka on two illegally established brick kilns after conducting separate operations in the Holadiapalong and Ratnapalong unions on Monday (February 10). The raids were carried out under the supervision of the Upazila Executive Officer and Executive Magistrate Kamrul Hossain Chowdhury.

In the Holadiapalong union, the owners of ABP Bricks, Abdul Gafur and Giyas Uddin Chowdhury, were fined two lakh taka for violating various provisions of the Brick Manufacturing and Kiln Installation Control Act. Similarly, in Ratnapalong's Bhuluki area, the owner of HKP Bricks was fined one lakh taka for similar violations.

Speaking about the operation, Kamrul Hossain Chowdhury confirmed that this was part of an ongoing crackdown on illegal brick kilns, which are a significant environmental threat. He also mentioned that two illegal brick kiln owners were fined one lakh taka each in a similar operation last Sunday.

The use of illegal brick kilns is highly concerning due to their environmental impact. These kilns often rely on unregulated and inefficient burning methods, consuming a large amount of fuel, and emitting hazardous pollutants into the air. Such practices not only contribute to severe deforestation but also deteriorate air quality, leading to respiratory illnesses and other health risks for local communities.

The constant release of particulate matter from brick kilns also worsens the air quality, contributing to long-term environmental degradation. Experts emphasize the importance of adopting modern, cleaner technology for brick manufacturing to reduce emissions and minimize ecological damage. Brick kilns are known for contributing significantly to deforestation as they rely on wood and other non-renewable resources for fuel, leading to the destruction of valuable forests in the region.

The government has been making efforts to regulate the industry and crack down on illegal kilns. The continuous operation of such kilns without proper oversight and measures not only harms the environment but also jeopardizes the health and safety of nearby residents.

The ongoing operation was supported by Ukhiya Range Officer Md. Shahinur Rahman, Ukhiya Fire Service and Civil Defense Officer, Bit Officers Bikash Das, Imdadul, Mohammad Arfat, Ukhiya Police, and Ansar members.

Expert Opinion:

Environmental experts have been vocal about the need to regulate the brick kiln industry more stringently. According to experts, modern brick kilns with better fuel efficiency and lower emissions can reduce the negative environmental and health effects caused by traditional brick production. They also recommend the introduction of renewable energy sources to replace harmful fuel use, ensuring that the brick manufacturing process becomes more eco-friendly and sustainable.

This report aims to highlight the environmental risks posed by illegal brick kilns, the impact on public health, and calls for better enforcement of regulations in the region.
