London, July 2 (V7N) — In one of the biggest surprises of Day 2 at Wimbledon 2025, World No. 2 Coco Gauff was knocked out in the first round by Ukraine’s Dayana Yastremska. The 24-year-old Yastremska, ranked No. 42 in the world, secured the biggest victory of her career, defeating Gauff 7-6 (7-3), 6-1 on Centre Court.
The result comes just weeks after Gauff’s French Open triumph, which had raised expectations of a second Grand Slam title this season. However, the American struggled with consistency against Yastremska’s powerful baseline play and aggressive returns.
“It’s unbelievable,” Yastremska said in her post-match interview. “To beat a player like Coco here on Centre Court—it’s a moment I’ll never forget.”
Gauff’s early exit marks a disappointing start to her Wimbledon campaign and adds her name to a growing list of top-seeded upsets in the tournament’s opening rounds. She became the fourth woman in the WTA top 10 to fall in the first round, joining No. 3 Jessica Pegula, No. 5 Qinwen Zheng (both eliminated earlier on Day 2), and No. 9 Paula Badosa, who was defeated on Day 1.
Yastremska will face Poland’s Magdalena Frech in the second round.
The early departures of so many top contenders have shaken up the women’s draw, potentially clearing the way for lower-ranked players to make deep runs in the tournament.
