Dhaka, Nov 03 (V7N) — In a significant ruling, the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court acquitted seven pro-BNP lawyers who faced contempt of court charges. The 4-member bench, led by the Chief Justice, issued the acquittal order on Sunday.
The court, however, imposed a fine of Tk 1 lakh on lawyer Nazmul Huda, one of the accused, instructing him to pay the amount within three weeks. The fine is designated for the July Shaheed Smriti Foundation, as directed by the court.
The acquitted lawyers include prominent figures such as former Attorney General AJ Mohammad Ali, BNP Legal Affairs Secretary Barrister Kaiser Kamal, Executive Committee Member Advocate Fahima Nasrin Munni, Supreme Court Branch President of the Nationalist Lawyers Forum Advocate Abdul Jabbar Bhuiyan, Barrister Ruhul Quddus Kajal, Advocate Mohammad Mahbubur Rahman Khan, and Advocate Gazi Kamrul Islam Sajal.
The contempt charges stemmed from a press conference and procession organized by the lawyers against two Appellate Division judges. On June 12, the court had previously excused the seven lawyers from personal appearance in the case.
