Dhaka, Nov 13 (V7N) — A writ petition has been filed in the High Court, contesting the legality of all power supply agreements between Bangladesh and India’s Adani Group. Barrister M. Qayyum submitted the writ on Wednesday in the public interest, targeting the Secretary of the Ministry of Electricity as a respondent.

The action follows a recent legal notice issued on November 6, which requested the government cancel or reconsider the contracts with Adani Group, arguing that the agreements are unfair and unilateral. The notice stipulated a three-day response period for the chairman of the Power Development Board (PDB) and the energy ministry secretary, which ended without resolution.

The contracts in question stem from a 25-year power purchase agreement signed in 2017. Under this agreement, Bangladesh receives electricity from Adani’s 1,600 MW power plant located in Jharkhand, India. With the expiration of the notice period, the matter has now advanced to the High Court for legal review.

This legal move seeks to address public concerns over the terms of the power agreements, especially regarding potential cost implications and dependency on foreign energy resources.
