Dhaka, Nov 19 (V7N) – The High Court (HC) has directed the formation of a high-powered committee to scrutinize the power agreement between the Bangladesh government and India’s Adani Group. The committee has been instructed to submit its findings to the court within two months of its formation.
Additionally, the HC ordered the submission of all documents related to the negotiation of the power deal within a month.
The directive came from a High Court division bench comprising Justice Farah Mahbub and Justice Debasish Roy Chowdhury during a hearing on a writ petition filed by Supreme Court lawyer Md. Abdul Qaium.
Filed on November 13, the writ challenges the legality of the power deal, claiming it to be unequal, unfair, and detrimental to the nation’s interests. The petitioner requested the agreement be modified on the principles of equity and fairness, or annulled if the Adani Group refuses to amend the terms.
Before filing the writ, the petitioner sent a legal notice to the Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB) chairman and the Secretary of the Ministry of Power, Energy, and Mineral Resources, demanding a review or cancellation of the deal within three days. The notice was ignored, prompting the legal action.
