Dhaka, Nov 30 (V7N) – The High Court is set to announce its verdict on Sunday regarding the death references and appeals tied to the infamous August 21 grenade attack cases.

The bench comprising Justice AKM Asaduzzaman and Justice Syed Enayet Hossain has listed the death references and appeals on its cause list for the day.

Earlier, on November 21, the bench reserved its decision after concluding hearings on the death references—documents seeking confirmation of death sentences—and the appeals filed by the convicted individuals. The cases had been marked as curia advisari vult (verdict pending).

Details of the Attack

The cases are linked to the grenade attack on an Awami League rally at Bangabandhu Avenue in Dhaka on August 21, 2004. The attack killed 24 people and injured around 300 others.

Sheikh Hasina, then opposition leader and the apparent target, narrowly survived the attack. She served as prime minister for 15 years but resigned and left the country on August 5 this year amid mass protests.

Previous Court Decisions

On October 10, 2018, a Dhaka court sentenced 19 individuals, including former BNP state minister for home Lutfozzaman Babar, to death for their involvement.

Another 19 individuals, including BNP acting chairman Tarique Rahman, currently residing in London, were sentenced to life imprisonment. Eleven others received various prison terms.

Of those convicted, 18 remain at large, while 31 are in custody.
