The order was issued on Wednesday by the HC bench comprising Justice Fahmida Kader and Justice Mobina Asaf, based on a writ petition filed by Chowdhury’s daughter, Barrister Samira Tanzin.
The DNA test, conducted after exhuming the body buried under the name “Mahmudur Rahman” at the Jamia Khatamun Nabiyyin Madrasa cemetery in Savar, Dhaka, verified that it was indeed Harris Chowdhury.
His body, currently at the Dhaka Medical College morgue, will soon be moved to the family graveyard in Kanaighat, Sylhet, for burial.
Expressing her relief, Samira spoke of the emotional toll and uncertainty surrounding her father’s death.
“As a child, it is tragic and painful to face doubts about my father’s death. People still question it. We’ve been harassed, and this is why we sought the court’s help to resolve the matter,” she stated.
The court has also issued a rule to ensure the issuance of a death certificate in Chowdhury’s name, the withdrawal of the Interpol red notice against him, and his burial with recognition as a ‘heroic’ freedom fighter.
The case traces back to 2021 when reports surfaced that Harris Chowdhury had been buried under the alias “Mahmudur Rahman” on September 4 of that year.
