DHAKA, May 22 (V7N) – The first day of hearing on the appeal filed by Zubaida Rahman, wife of BNP leader Tarique Rahman, seeking the cancellation of her 3-year sentence in a case involving the acquisition of assets beyond known income, has concluded. The High Court has set Monday, May 26, for the next hearing.
The hearing took place on Thursday, May 22, 2025, before a single High Court bench of Justice Md. Khasruzzaman, who fixed the next date for the proceedings.
Zubaida Rahman's lawyer, SM Shahjahan, stated during the hearing that "nowhere in the case is it said that Dr. Zubaida Rahman acquired assets through dishonest means."
Earlier, on May 14, the High Court had accepted Zubaida Rahman's appeal for hearing. Subsequently, she was granted bail until the appeal is disposed of, and the fine imposed by the trial court in the case was also suspended.
The case originated on September 26, 2007, when the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) filed it against Tarique Rahman, Zubaida Rahman, and three other individuals at the Kafrul Police Station in the capital. The charges included concealing information about assets and acquiring assets beyond known income. On August 2, 2023, the trial court delivered its verdict, sentencing Tarique Rahman to 9 years in prison and Zubaida Rahman to 3 years in prison under two sections of the ACC case, along with imposing fines on both.
