Chattogram, July 24 (V7N) – A Chattogram court has rejected the bail petition of Chinmoy Krishna Das Brahmachari, the spokesperson for the Sanatani Jagran Jote, in five cases, including the murder of Advocate Alif (Saiful Islam).
The order was passed by Judge Hasanul Islam of the Chattogram Metropolitan Sessions Judge Court following a hearing on Thursday morning (July 24).
A 4-member legal team led by Advocate Apurba Kumar Bhattacharya from Dhaka represented Chinmoy in court. They argued that Chinmoy had already been proven innocent strategically, and further claimed that he has been suffering from liver cirrhosis for the past eight months. The defense alleged that the court did not adequately consider his health condition during the hearing.
In light of the sensitive nature of the case, a large number of law enforcement personnel were deployed at the court premises for additional security.
The controversy began on October 31, 2024, when Firoz Khan, then the general secretary of BNP’s Chandgaon Mohra Ward in Chattogram, filed a case at Kotwali Police Station accusing Chinmoy and 19 others of sedition and insulting the national flag. Notably, Firoz Khan was later expelled from the BNP.
Chinmoy Krishna Das was arrested in Dhaka on November 25, 2024, in connection with that case. The following day, during a clash over Chinmoy’s bail hearing, lawyer Saiful Islam (Alif) was brutally beaten and hacked to death. His father, Jamal Uddin, later filed a murder case, naming 31 individuals involved in the incident.
The court’s decision has sparked renewed debate around high-profile political and religious cases in the country.
