Dhaka, Oct 16 (V7N) — The prosecution has concluded its arguments against Sheikh Hasina and three other accused in the July Uprising crimes against humanity case. The hearing took place on Thursday (October 16).
According to tribunal sources, the state-appointed defense lawyers will begin presenting their rebuttal arguments on Monday (October 20). Once the defense completes its submission, the prosecution will deliver a counter-rebuttal, after which the case will move toward verdict pronouncement.
The prosecution has sought the maximum penalty for Sheikh Hasina and former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, along with an order to sell the accused’s assets to compensate the victims.
In his argument, Chief Prosecutor Tajul Islam said that “considering the magnitude of the crime, Sheikh Hasina deserves the death penalty 1,400 times.”
Later, speaking to reporters, Tajul Islam added that if the evidence presented in this case were submitted before any court in the world, the accused would receive the highest punishment.
He further mentioned that since former IGP Chowdhury Abdullah Al Mamun has turned state witness, the tribunal will make a separate decision regarding his role in the case.
