Dhaka, Oct 16 (V7N) — Chief Prosecutor Tajul Islam has urged the tribunal to impose the death penalty on Sheikh Hasina in the ongoing July uprising crimes against humanity case, stating that while sentencing her 1,400 times for multiple murders is impossible, it would be an injustice if she were not given the death penalty at least once.

At a briefing following the conclusion of the prosecution’s arguments on Thursday, Tajul Islam detailed that Sheikh Hasina had allegedly ordered shootings and helicopter bombings, and denied medical treatment to the injured. He further claimed that she had threatened to kill protesters even after fleeing to India.

Tajul Islam added, “If this evidence is presented in any court in the world, the accused would receive the maximum punishment.” He also noted that former IGP Chowdhury Abdullah Al Mamun has become a royal witness, and the tribunal will decide on his case separately.

Earlier, the prosecution requested the maximum sentence for both Sheikh Hasina and former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, and sought to compensate victims by selling the accused’s assets.

The defendants’ state-appointed lawyers will present their rebuttal on Monday, October 20. After the defense concludes, the prosecution will reply, following which the tribunal will proceed to deliver its verdict.
