Dhaka, Oct 29 (V7N)- The fifth day of the hearing on appeals seeking the restoration of the caretaker government system is underway at the Supreme Court. The hearing began on Wednesday (October 29) morning before a seven-member full appellate bench headed by Chief Justice Dr. Syed Refaat Ahmed. The BNP’s legal counsel is currently presenting arguments.

On the fourth day of the hearing, Jamaat-e-Islami’s lawyer Shishir Monir told the court that the caretaker government was a unique and effective system that was abolished due to the lack of foresight among political leaders.

Earlier, during the third day of proceedings, the same lawyer argued that the process of abolishing the caretaker government system had been “pre-planned.”

The Supreme Court granted leave to appeal on August 27, allowing a review of the 2011 judgment that nullified the caretaker government provision. The appeals were filed by Dr. Badiul Alam Majumder, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, Jamaat Secretary General Mia Golam Parwar, and five others.

In 2011, a majority verdict led by then Chief Justice ABM Khairul Haque struck down the caretaker government system, deeming it unconstitutional.
