Dhaka, Aug 29 (V7N): The Advisory Council, during a meeting on August 29, gave its final approval to the draft "Security of Family Members of the Father of the Nation (Repeal) Ordinance, 2024," pending vetting by the Legislative and Parliamentary Affairs Department. The meeting was chaired by Interim Government Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus at the state guesthouse Jamuna.

The "Father of the Nation Security of Family Members Act, 2009 (Act No. 63 of 2009)" was originally enacted by the previous government to provide special security and state privileges to the family members of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. A gazette was later issued to implement these provisions.

However, the Advisory Council has now determined that this law represents clear discrimination by granting state privileges to a specific family, which contradicts the interim government's commitment to eliminating all forms of discrimination following the anti-discrimination student uprising.

In light of this, the Council emphasized the necessity of taking immediate action to repeal the Act through an ordinance. Under the existing law, family members of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman were afforded comprehensive state security across the country, including at their residences, along with free utility services.
