Dhaka, September 01 — The High Court of Bangladesh has dismissed a petition filed by Arifur Rahman Murad Bhuiyan, the Executive Director of Sarda Society of Narsingdi, which sought the banning and deregistration of the Bangladesh Awami League for the alleged indiscriminate killing of students during a recent agitation.

The bench, comprising Justice AKM Asaduzzaman and Justice Md. Mahbubul ul Islam, dismissed the writ petition on the grounds that it was "not raised."

During a hearing last Tuesday, Attorney General Md. Asaduzzaman requested the court dismiss the petition. He argued that the interim government, currently in power, has no intention of banning any political party or cancelling any party's registration, including that of the Awami League.

The petition, filed on August 19, included several demands. It sought to ban and deregister the Awami League, citing their alleged involvement in the killing of students. Additionally, the writ requested a minimum three-year tenure for the interim government to allow for comprehensive national reforms. It also called for the recovery of Tk 11 lakh crore allegedly smuggled abroad and the transfer of officials appointed on a contractual basis during the previous Awami League administration.

The petition also sought the disclosure of the names of institutions bearing the name of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

With the High Court's dismissal, the petition's demands, including the controversial proposal to ban one of the country's leading political parties, will not move forward under the current judicial ruling.
