Dhaka, Sep 24 (V7N) – The High Court has issued a ruling asking why the martyrs of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement in July and August should not be officially recognized as national heroes. The court also inquired why the families of the victims should not receive financial support, similar to the benefits provided to the families of freedom fighters.

The ruling was delivered by a High Court bench consisting of Justice Kamrul Hossain Mollah and Justice Kazi Zinat Hoque on Tuesday, following a preliminary hearing of a writ petition.

The cabinet secretary and the secretary of the Ministry of Liberation War Affairs, among others, have been directed to respond to the ruling.

Senior lawyer Zainul Abedin, along with Advocates Raihan Alam and Zakia Humaira Tama, represented the petitioners in the case.

The writ petition was filed by Dhaka resident Ali Najer, who sought a directive to declare the martyrs of the July-August student uprising as national heroes.
