Dhaka, Nov 08, (V7N) - Former Member of Parliament (MP) Tahzeeb Alam Siddique has been arrested by the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) in Dhaka. Siddique, who represented the Jhenaidah-2 constituency, was detained Thursday night from Nabinnagar in Savar, according to RAB spokesperson ANM Imran Khan.

The arrest is linked to multiple criminal cases filed against Siddique at the Jhenaidah Sadar Police Station. The charges include murder, vandalism, and arson. Siddique, a member of the ruling Awami League, served as an MP in both the 2014 and 2018 elections but lost his seat in the 12th general election held in January 2024.

According to RAB, three separate cases are pending against the former lawmaker. He is named as the third accused in a case filed under the Explosive Substances Act on August 19. Additionally, he is the second accused in a similar case filed on August 24. The most serious charge involves a murder case from August 27, 2023, in which Siddique is one of several individuals accused in the death of Abdus Salam, a Jamaat-e-Islami activist. The murder case was filed 11 years after the incident by the victim’s father-in-law, Abu Bakar Siddique, a former Agricultural Bank official.

The case also implicates Shafiqul Islam, the president of the Awami League's Jhenaidah district chapter, and over 270 other party members. This arrest is part of a broader wave of crackdowns against top Awami League figures in the wake of political turmoil following Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's resignation and the formation of an interim government in August.
