Dhaka, July 11 (V7N) — Former Janata Bank Chairman Abul Barkat has been arrested by the Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police from the capital's Dhanmondi area.

The arrest was made around 11:30 pm on Thursday night, confirmed Mohammad Nasirul Islam, Joint Commissioner of DB (South).

Speaking to the media, he said, “Abul Barkat was arrested based on a request from the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) in connection with an ongoing case. He will be handed over to the ACC tomorrow (Friday). Legal procedures are currently underway.”

Details of the specific charges brought by the ACC were not immediately disclosed. However, officials said further information will be revealed following his handover to the Commission.

Abul Barkat previously served as the chairman of the state-owned Janata Bank and is known for his involvement in various financial and academic sectors.
