Jhalokathi, Dec 10 (V7N) – Police have arrested domestic worker Ayesha in connection with the brutal murder of a mother and daughter at their residence on Shahjahan Road in Mohammadpur, Dhaka. During preliminary interrogation, Ayesha admitted that she attempted to flee the apartment after stealing valuables, but was caught by the homeowner, Laila Afroze. She reportedly stabbed Laila with a knife she was carrying, and when Laila’s daughter, Nafisa, came forward upon hearing her mother’s screams, the attacker stabbed her as well.
Sub-Inspector Md Shahidul Islam Mashum of Mohammadpur Police Station and the investigating officer of the case shared these details with journalists on Wednesday in Nalcity, Jhalokathi.
Earlier in the afternoon, a police team from Mohammadpur arrested Ayesha from Koyar Char village in Nalcity. Her husband, Robiul Islam, was also detained for questioning. The raid was conducted by a nine-member team led by Assistant Commissioner (Mohammadpur Zone) Md Abdullah Al Mamun.
On Monday morning, Laila Afroze, 48, and her daughter Nafisa Lawal Binte Aziz, 15, were found murdered inside their apartment. CCTV footage shows that the domestic worker entered the building wearing a burqa and later exited in Nafisa’s school uniform and a face mask. The homeowner, MZ Azizul Islam, filed a case naming the domestic worker as the prime suspect.
Police said Ayesha had joined the household just four days before the killings, identifying herself with a false name. After murdering the mother and daughter, she put on Nafisa’s school uniform and left the building to avoid suspicion.
Laila Afroze was a homemaker, and Nafisa was a ninth-grade student at Mohammadpur Preparatory School. Her father, MZ Azizul Islam, is a physics teacher at Sunbeams School in Uttara.
CCTV analysis revealed that Nafisa’s father left home for school around 7 a.m. At 7:51 a.m., Ayesha was seen entering the apartment building wearing a burqa. Around 9:36 a.m., she left the premises dressed in the school uniform belonging to Nafisa. When Nafisa’s father returned home at approximately 11:30 a.m., he found his wife and daughter lying in pools of blood.
A police source stated that Nafisa became aware of her mother being attacked and attempted to call for help through the intercom located in the dining area. The attempt failed, and she was stabbed there. During the struggle, the intercom line was severed. In a search of the residence, investigators recovered a switch-gear knife and a fruit-cutting knife from the bathroom. Police believe these were the weapons used in the murders.
The building’s security guard, Malek, was taken into police custody earlier for questioning as part of the investigation, according to police officials.
