Bandarban, Jan 08 (V7N) – Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) seized a pickup truck loaded with a significant quantity of illegal timber during an operation in the Sonai Chhari border area of Naikhongchhari upazila in Bandarban district on Wednesday afternoon.
The operation was carried out on January 7 by a special patrol team from Mongjoypara Border Outpost under the Cox’s Bazar Battalion (34 BGB). Acting on confidential intelligence, the patrol team conducted the operation at a location known as Bodhchhara in the Sonai Chhari area, approximately three kilometers inside Bangladesh from Border Pillar 42.
During the operation, BGB personnel intercepted a pickup truck carrying illegally harvested timber. However, the driver and the helper of the vehicle managed to flee the scene, and no arrests could be made.
According to BGB sources, the seized timber included 92 cubic feet of Gamar wood, 49.33 cubic feet of Akashmoni wood, 1.25 cubic feet of teak wood, and 1.25 cubic feet of Deowa wood.
The seizure was confirmed by the Commanding Officer of the Cox’s Bazar Battalion, Lieutenant Colonel SM Khairul Alam. He stated that BGB operations against illegal logging and timber smuggling in the border areas would continue in the future.
The seized timber and the pickup truck have been handed over to the relevant authorities for further legal action in accordance with existing laws.
