On Thursday, officials from the Customs Intelligence and Investigation Directorate arrested two Chinese nationals at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport (HSIA) in Dhaka for attempting to smuggle 46 gold bars.

The individuals, identified as Liu Zhongliang and Chen Geng, arrived in Dhaka from Dubai on a Flydubai Airlines flight at 6:50 am.

"Acting on a tip-off, the officials seized three charger lights from their possession. A total of 46 gold bars were found hidden inside the batteries," Assistant Director of Customs Intelligence and Investigation Directorate Sabrina Amin told BSS.

The total weight of the recovered gold is 5.336 kilograms, with an estimated market value of around Tk 5 crore, she stated.

The seized gold bars have been sent to the Dhaka Customs House warehouse.

The arrested individuals have been handed over to the airport police station, and a case has been filed against them, the official added.
