Mongla, Sep 11 (V7N) - Three separate cases have been filed against 87 leaders and activists of the Awami League, Jubo League, and Chhatra League, including Sheikh Abdur Rahman, the recently ousted former Mayor of Mongla Port Municipality and President of Mongla Municipal Awami League; Sheikh Abdus Salam, former Municipal Chairman; Sheikh Kamrun Nahar Hai, the Upazila Women Vice Chairman; and Sheikh Kamruzzaman Jasim, General Secretary of Mongla Municipal Awami League.
 
The cases were filed in the Bagerhat District Speedy Trial Court on September 9 by local BNP leaders Kamal Hawladar, Babu Molla, and Fatema Begum. The Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) is conducting the investigation.
 
Other key accused include Mamun Sheikh, General Secretary of the Municipal Jubo League; Vice President Nur Alam Ziku; Jubo League leaders Makhon Mizan, Selim Sheikh, Liton Farazi, Md. Shahadat, Md. Wasim, Moinul Hasan Mintu, Shahidul Molla, Abdul Jabbar Shikder; Kazi Moazzem Hossain Rana, President of the Municipal Chhatra League; General Secretary Shahrokh Bappi; Fahim Hasan Ontor, General Secretary of the Municipal Volunteer League; Golam Kibria, son-in-law of former Mayor Sheikh Abdur Rahman; and Mahmud Hawladar, former Chairman of Morrelganj Upazila Sadar Union Parishad, along with 87 others.
 
The plaintiffs claimed that the accused are influential, engaged in extortion, and are known criminals. They alleged that on January 15, 2021, around 10 PM, the accused attacked them with machetes and sticks near Madrasa Road and Araz Makordon Cyclone Shelter, injuring them severely due to previous political rivalry.
 
Plaintiffs Kamal Hawladar, Fatema Begum, and Babu Molla stated that they were unable to file the cases earlier due to the influence of the accused, as the Awami League was in power. Attempts to reach the accused for comments were unsuccessful, as they are reportedly in hiding and their phones are switched off.
