Chilmari, Oct 23 (V7N)- As part of the ongoing campaign to conserve hilsa during its main breeding season, the Fisheries Department conducted a significant operation along the Brahmaputra River, targeting illegal fishing activities. The operation took place on Tuesday from noon to evening across Ashtamirchar, Nayarhat, and Chilmari Union.

During the operation, authorities seized 15,000 meters of illegal current nets and 32 pitches of hilsa fish. The confiscated nets were burned by Upazila Executive Magistrate Naeem Uddin at Ramna Ghat, while the seized hilsa fish were distributed to local orphanages in Ilish Upazila.

Upazila Fisheries Officer Badruzzaman Rana, along with Police Outpost IC Ferdous Alam, were present during the operation. Officer Rana emphasized the importance of protecting hilsa during the 22-day fishing ban, which runs from October 13 to November 3, aimed at ensuring the sustainability of the species.

“We will continue this operation to protect mother hilsa and ensure compliance with the fishing ban,” said Officer Rana.

The initiative is part of the government's efforts to safeguard the breeding cycle of hilsa, a crucial species for Bangladesh's fishing industry, and ensure a sustainable future for the fish population.
