Sylhet, Nov 30 (V7N)- With the arrival of winter, Sylhet's picturesque tourist spots are bustling with visitors, signaling a revival of the region’s tourism economy after prolonged hardships caused by natural disasters and the pandemic.

Tourists are flocking to Sylhet's renowned attractions, including Jaflong, Ratargul, Bichnakandi, Sadapathar, Lalakhal, Panthumai, and Mayabi Jharna, drawn by its rolling hills, lush tea gardens, serene blue pools, and flowing streams. The surge is particularly noticeable as annual examinations end across various districts, prompting families to take children to explore Sylhet's natural beauty.

Tourism stakeholders estimate that 5 to 6 lakh visitors are expected to visit Sylhet between Thursday and Sunday, taking advantage of school holidays and weekly breaks. This has resulted in most hotel and motel accommodations being fully booked, with any remaining vacancies likely to be snapped up quickly.

Businesspeople linked to Sylhet’s tourism are optimistic. “The sector has suffered immensely due to the pandemic, floods, and political instability,” said Naushad Al Muqtadir, former General Secretary of the Sylhet Hotel and Guest House Owners Association. “The increased influx of tourists for four consecutive days is a much-needed boost.”

Sylhet's tourism has faced significant challenges over the past few years. Floods in 2022 and the pandemic in 2020 devastated the industry, while political unrest and instability further hindered recovery. Although there was some business during Eid-ul-Fitr, floods during Eid-ul-Azha dampened the season’s prospects.

Tourist spots across Sylhet, particularly Sadapathar, Jaflong, and Lalakhal, were teeming with visitors on Thursday, a number that doubled on Friday. Local traders, boatmen, photographers, and other service providers are busier than ever, catering to the influx.

To ensure the safety of tourists, the district administration, upazila administration, police, and tourist police have strengthened security measures across all major attractions. The Deputy Commissioner of Sylhet confirmed that adequate arrangements have been made to handle the large crowds and ensure a pleasant experience for all visitors.

This renewed activity brings hope to a region heavily reliant on tourism. Both locals and industry professionals are eager for a strong winter season, viewing it as an opportunity to reclaim Sylhet’s place as a premier travel destination in Bangladesh.
