Jan 11, (V7N) - Members of the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) apprehended 58 Rohingyas, including women, children, and elderly individuals, during an illegal entry attempt at the Buchitong border in Alikadam Upazila's Nayapara Union, Bandarban. The operation took place in the early hours of Saturday, conducted by the Alikadam Battalion.
According to police and local sources, the detentions occurred after receiving a tip-off about Rohingyas fleeing Myanmar with the assistance of several Bangladeshi nationals. Acting on this information, BGB personnel initiated a raid in the border area, capturing the group around 4 AM. The Rohingyas were intercepted while being transported in a truck, a private car, and several motorcycles. Additionally, five individuals accused of facilitating the illegal crossing were also detained during the operation. Legal proceedings against the detainees are currently underway, with cases being prepared at Alikadam Police Station.
The Rohingyas are expected to be pushed back to Myanmar as part of the authorities' ongoing efforts to prevent illegal crossings. Mirza Zahid Uddin, officer-in-charge of Alikadam Police Station, confirmed the receipt of information regarding the detainees but noted that no case had yet been filed. He stated, “Appropriate measures will be taken once the case is lodged.” This incident occurs amidst a prolonged conflict in Myanmar, where escalating disputes between the government and rebel groups have forced many Rohingyas to flee in search of safety. Bangladeshi authorities remain vigilant in monitoring the border to control the influx of refugees and maintain security.
