Pabna, Jan 14, (V7N) - The BNP's senior joint convener for Santhia Upazila, Shamsur Rahman, has been temporarily expelled over allegations of disrupting a party conference with weapons. The Pabna district BNP has also recommended his permanent expulsion to the central committee.
On Sunday night, a letter jointly signed by Pabna district BNP convener Habibur Rahman Habib and member secretary Advocate Masud Khandaker confirmed the expulsion. The letter has been sent to BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi Ahmed, and other relevant central leaders, including divisional coordinators and organizational secretaries.
The expulsion letter stated:
"Despite repeated warnings for engaging in activities against party discipline, Shamsur Rahman showed no regard for party decisions. On January 10, he disrupted the Bera municipal council-2025 near the conference venue, creating chaos with his followers armed with weapons. He disrespected party leadership and engaged in inappropriate behavior. Based on these actions, he has been temporarily expelled, and a recommendation for permanent expulsion has been forwarded to the central committee."
Advocate Masud Khandaker confirmed the expulsion, saying, "The party will not tolerate actions against its discipline. He has been temporarily suspended, and the central committee will decide on permanent expulsion."
Responding to the decision, Shamsur Rahman said over the phone, "This expulsion is arbitrary and aimed at tarnishing my reputation. I will inform senior party leaders about this unjust decision."
Background
On November 14, a new 23-member Santhia Upazila BNP committee was formed, with Khairun Nahar Khanam Miru as convener and Shamsur Rahman as senior joint convener. The announcement, signed by district BNP leaders Habibur Rahman and Advocate Masud Khandaker, sparked widespread criticism on social media.
The following day, on November 15, Shamsur Rahman and his supporters staged a broom procession at C&B Mor in Bera. They alleged widespread irregularities and corruption in forming the committee, calling it a "pocket committee." During the protest, they burned effigies of district leaders Habibur Rahman and Advocate Masud Khandaker.
This incident has further deepened divisions within the party, highlighting ongoing tensions at the grassroots level.
