Rajshahi, Mar 03 (V7N) - The Barendra Multipurpose Development Authority (BMDA) has introduced a hotline service (01336-426330) to improve irrigation facilities and address farmer complaints in the Barendra region. BMDA Chairman Dr. M. Asaduzzaman announced the initiative on Sunday (March 3) to ensure smooth irrigation operations during the ongoing Boro season.
Currently, BMDA operates 16,715 irrigation machines across 330,000 hectares in Rajshahi and Rangpur divisions. Each pump is managed 24/7 by an operator selected from the local farming community to ensure uninterrupted water supply.
To support small ethnic groups, BMDA has implemented a policy prioritizing tribal communities for operator appointments. So far, 80 individuals from Rajshahi, Naogaon, and Chapainawabganj districts have been hired as tubewell operators under this initiative.
The newly launched BMDA hotline (01336-426330) allows over 1 million farmers to report issues such as non-cooperation by operators, delays in irrigation, overcharging, and harassment. This initiative aims to enhance transparency and ensure fair water distribution.
To handle complaints effectively, BMDA has established six district-based committees. These teams will take immediate action within 24 hours of receiving a report. Officials will visit the site, investigate, and resolve issues to prevent disruptions in irrigation services.
BMDA senior officials emphasized their commitment to farmer welfare and assured continued support for improving irrigation systems in the Barendra region. They urged all stakeholders to cooperate in ensuring efficient water management and fair service delivery.
