Tangail, Mar 16 (V7N) – Dozens of individuals in Tangail have formed a human chain, demanding justice against a woman named Sonia, the owner of the Sonia Foundation, who they accuse of embezzling millions of taka. The victims held a two-hour protest in front of the Tangail Press Club on Sunday, March 16.
The protesters allege that Sonia defrauded people from various parts of Bangladesh, including Tangail, by promising to facilitate their migration to Australia. They claim that Sonia failed to send the money abroad as promised and instead filed false cases of torture and attempted rape against those who demanded their money back.
According to the victims, Sonia's niece, Jannat Akhter, is working as her accomplice. They also allege that a man named Saju has been falsely imprisoned in a fabricated rape attempt case, while other creditors are living in fear of retaliation.
"We demand that the government bring Sonia to justice very soon," one victim stated during the protest. "Otherwise, hundreds of more families will fall victim to Sonia's fraud." The protesters also called for the release of Saju, whom they described as a "brilliant student" falsely implicated in the case.
The human chain was attended by Advocate Azim Uddin Biplob, Senior Joint Secretary of Tangail Sadar Upazila BNP; former Tangail Municipality councilor Rocky Haider; Hasrat Khan Bhasani, grandson of Maulana Abdul Hamid Khan Bhasani; prominent businessman Iqbal Hossain of Santosh; and numerous individuals who claim to have been defrauded by Sonia.
The victims are calling for a thorough investigation into Sonia's activities and demanding the return of their embezzled funds.
