Rajshahi, Mar 16 (V7N) – A violent confrontation between two factions of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) broke out inside the Boalia Police Station in Rajshahi on Saturday afternoon, March 15.
The incident stemmed from the handover of Abul Kalam Azad, president of the Rajshahi Truck Owners Association, to police by one BNP faction. Azad is an accused in a case related to attacks on students and the public during the July Movement.
According to reports, as Azad was being prepared for transfer to court from the Boalia Police Station, a rival BNP faction arrived at the station attempting to secure his release. When this faction began advocating for Azad, tensions escalated rapidly between the two groups within the police station premises.
The situation further deteriorated when Boalia Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mostaq Ahmed attempted to escort Azad to court. While in OC Ahmed's custody, Azad allegedly attacked Al-Amin Sarkar Titu, co-organizing secretary of the Krishak Dal central committee. This sparked an attempt by Titu's faction to retaliate against Azad.
Police and the opposing BNP faction intervened to prevent further violence, and Azad was quickly transported to court. However, the incident resulted in a physical altercation between the two BNP factions within the police station.
