Dhaka, Apr 07 (V7N) – Inspector General of Police (IGP) Baharul Alam has issued a directive to arrest those involved in the vandalism and looting of shops and business establishments across several cities, including Sylhet, amid recent protest activities.

The order came on Monday (April 7), according to Shafiqul Alam, press secretary to the Chief Advisor. Citing the IGP, he said that law enforcement agencies possess video evidence of those involved in the attacks, and efforts are already underway to identify and arrest the culprits.

The IGP reiterated that while the government respects the right to lawful protest, criminal acts disguised as demonstrations will not be tolerated under any circumstances.

Meanwhile, Bangladesh Investment Development Authority (BIDA) Executive Chairman Chowdhury Ashiq Mahmud Bin Harun expressed deep concern over the incident. He said, “At a time when we are organizing a summit to position Bangladesh as a promising investment destination, it is truly disheartening to witness such barbaric acts within our borders.”

He noted that many of the damaged businesses were owned by local entrepreneurs, while some belonged to foreign investors who placed their trust in Bangladesh’s business environment. “These ventures created jobs for our youth. Those who committed these acts of destruction are enemies of employment, economic progress, and national stability,” he added.

The incidents of violence and destruction come amid heightened tensions in various parts of the country, as protesters continue to voice their concerns over a range of national and international issues.
